    has anyone seen sportscenter today?

in talking about the eagles' qb situation, they cited a rule about how many qbs they could use for a certain situation, in relation to bringing in garcia as the no. 3 guy no sooner than the 3rd quarter. it sounded confusing as hell.

anyone have any idea what rule they were referencing?

    » NFL'S "third-quarterback" rule -- sometimes misunderstood:

Seventeen years ago (1991) the third-quarterback rule was instituted to enable teams to have an emergency quarterback available who was not on the 45-man game-day active roster, since many teams, for strategic purposes, only carried two quarterbacks on their game-day roster.

Everybody thinks they understand the NFL's "third-quarterback" rule. But do they?

The rule states that if a third quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game at any position.

Another aspect of the rule is sometimes misunderstood. It is a coach's decision as to whether a third quarterback will be used.

The active quarterbacks do not have to be injured for a team to use its third quarterback.

    thanks, gutter.

easy solution: start kolb and have garcia as the backup since he knows the eagles' system by and large. put vick no. 3 so that he'd be able to shift back to another position if kolb or garcia were able to play again.

Is this what sports writing is coming to these days? You have to monitor the Twitter accounts of players' relatives?

Re: No. 3 QBs...that rule is why Jets punter/part-time QB Tom Tupa had to play the second and third quarters after Vinny Testaverde tore his (EDIT: Achilles) diving for a ball in the '99 opener. Rick Mirer was the no. 3 QB. Had Bill Parcells known then what he knows now about Mirer's abject suck, he would have started Tupa the rest of the way and the Jets might have made the playoffs.

1991 was the year the Eagles had four quarterbacks start after Cunningham was lost for the season in the first game.

Since there was some discussion of this hit on the Week 2 thread, I figured I'd post this. The NFL fined Steelers' safety Tyrone Carter $5,000 for his hit on Bears tight end Greg Olson. He is filing an appeal.

Carter certainly isn't the brightest of bulbs. He is being fined for leading with his head, but his argument is that he couldn't have possibly hit Olson's head because of the height difference between the two of them. (Olson is 6-foot-6 and Carter is 5-9). Maybe it would help if he bothered to understand why he is being fined before he complains.

Polamalu can't get back fast enough.

If you have 3 QBs on the 45-man active roster, you can use them anyway you want. The third QB rule applies to an inactive QB, not on the 45-man, who is the emergency guy if the other two get hurt.
The Eagles most likely will have Kolb, Garcia and Vick on the 45-man active list for Sunday.

That's got to be the one. And I'm positive it was Axthelm.

His hit on Olsen during the fourth-quarter TD drive was helmet-to-helmet.
