And seeing them buy $20 scratch-offs, which are for sale in my state. I have no problem with the lottery in general (I too will buy a Powerball ticket from time to time -- but only when the jackpot is over $200 million, because, ya know, $100-$175 mil isn't worth my time), but I think it's absolutely predatory when you see a $20 scratch-off that advertises $1 billion in total prizes.

How do you feel about payday loans?

I'm not trying to go welfare queen here. But if we are talking people truly at rock bottom, to the point they require food stamps, Section 8 housing, etc., then saying it is no big deal to blow 9% of their income on lotto holds less water.

A usurious pox upon our system that should be made illegal, along with the type of loans that caused the housing crash and killed our economy. And an apple to the orange that is this thread.

So when is it okay to exploit the poor economic choices of poor people, and when is it not? I'm confused.

Cute, Spocky. Anybody can play the lotto; many in all classes have fun doing so. Payday loans is a grim, exorbitant-interest option pointed at lower classes, and I'm sure most people who do it know it's not the best option, but Bank of America ain't dealing with 'em. And unless someone is spending their whole paycheck on the lotto, it is, again, apples and oranges.

I think you are severely underestimating the effects of the lottery, regardless of what you think its intent is.

And I believe you're overestimating. I'm fine with leaving it at that.
