Just got back from vacation. Hi, all...

Anybody who's read my posts over the years knows how in I am on this, with this name or my real one.

I've sent e-mails to APSE leadership several times about Heinz being A) nominated and B) selected. I guess I was a little in the dark on the process, but Kindred's post points out that he has been nominated before.

I'm not going to say a single unkind word about all the completely worthy previous winners. But Heinz is 91 -- I don't even know if he'd travel to accept it next year anyway -- and it's time to give him his due while he's still with us.

Whether Mr. Heinz is ever honored is of little note.

His work will outlive many of us.

Echoing 21's comments, if nothing else, this thread may have opened the eyes of many young'uns (and reminded a few greybeards) to the beauty and power of our craft in the hands of a thoughtful workman.

  11. Death of a Racehorse is what any writer should strive for in any writing, especially deadline writing. It's not about telling people what happened, it's about showing people what happened.

The color in that story, written amazingly on deadline, is something I'll strive to match for my entire, hopefully long, career. Not to get all sappy, but it's really an inspirational piece.

    Consider this my endorsement.
