Volleyball Feature Photo Ideas

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Bristol Whipped, Sep 7, 2006.

  1. I've done my share of football feature photos and it seems like there are always plenty of possibilities, but there don't seem to be as many with volleyball. The only thing I can really come up with is a simple shot of the girl standing with the ball at her hip. I can cut her out in photoshop and make it look respectable, but I'd like to do something outside the box. Has anybody seen any others that work?

How about hitting a ball at the net or making a diving save or something?

  3. If she wears those really short, form-fitting shorts stand behind her, have her bend over and grab her one of ankles and perform a stretching routine! While she's stretching out have her look over her shoulder back at you with her best poutty face or perhaps a sly, coy or wry smile.
Granted, you probably won't be allowed to run any of those photos in the paper, but you'll have a great starter set for a soft-core porn collection.
You might even want to post a few on here ... to show off your work of course (ala Robert Maplethorpe) ;D

Try unusual angles and/or try having the subject do something -- shoot through a net; shoot from directly above on a hit; get a real low angle for a dig. I'm not a photog so my suggestions are probably pretty amateurish but usually a unique angle can make a pic look a little less boring.

It'll just be turned into a cutout with a giant numeral next to it anyway.

Do you ever play on names? With a preview story of the state volleyball tourney, the team I was covering had a pair of sisters with the last name James. They were two of the best players on the team. So I bought two halloween costumes that were of old west gun fighters and had the James' girls wear them. I called the article, "The James gang hopes to ride again." A play on Frank and Jessie. It was slightly corny, but it was different from the normal volleyball photos you get. The coach and the players loved it.

Second idea, I saw in the state's largest paper a few years back. One player is laying in the arms of her teammates as they are lined up. The player laying on the arms is holding a volleyball on her hip. She's on her side facing the camera.
