Yeah I do understand what I'm saying and I do get what happens if the protections aren't in place. But I don't get that the more the citizens are protected from the government, the less protected we are from each other and the less the government is able to do to protect us. You may pray every night that the man that rapes your child gets a wonderful and zealous attorney to represent him in court, I just want the government to prevent the rape or, at the very least, provide justice for all, not just the accused.

So Fuck Padilla in the ear with a jack hammer, with or with a trial, I don;t care much right now. Then lets move on to the 2 brutal animals in Connecticut for raping and killing a family. Gut them with a rusty knife without a trial will do more crime prevention than any month of criminal constitutional trials.

Well, the thing is, I or a family member are more likely to be a victim of random violence and criminal behavior, than scooped up and tossed behind bars.

I don't believe that I'm well served by the current social compact.

I'm not sure where you get your numbers, but these bogeymen have been telling anyone who will listen that they want to kill us in large numbers, have succededonce on a arge scale, multiple times on smaller scales, and have been foiled more than that. But I think I'll choose the next commander in chief based on his position on carbon emissions.

OK Guy, fine.

But I'm willing to bet that in 2000, when ''terrorism'' wasn't an issue, you still thought the Democrats were totally wrong about something else that was your overriding issue. (abortion maybe, or maybe you're super-rich and taxes were a big concern). At least in that situation, Democrat or Republican actually matters.
