Crud. Looks like the slump has hit Canadian papers, too. For a while some of the papers were doing a lot better than their American counterparts. And those are two pretty solid products.

What a douchey comment. What, does he think employees are thinking they are part of the problem? Instead of blaming your employees, you corporate ass, blame yourself. You're the one in charge.

And most of the major ciites in the Great White North are two-paper towns as well.

The Vancouver Sun's new publisher will be Mr. Bill Lumberg.

Just wondering. Are the two newspapers in a Canadian city generally under separate ownership. Is one an afternoon newspaper and one a morning newspaper? Have Canadian classifieds help up better than in the United States?

The two Vancouver papers are both a.m. and it is an unusual situation in which they are owned by the same company. Canadian classifieds have not held up better than U.S.
Postmedia, which owns the two Vancouver papers as well as others, is bleeding badly.

What is the economic rationale of Postmedia keeping both papers open? I am sure the two each offer a distinctive editorial voice, but sadly, distinctive voices are generally not appreciated by the bankers.

One's a broadsheet the other is a tab. One is geared towards a younger reader, the other an older more sophisticated reader.

It is very rare in Canada to have two major dailies in the same city owned by the same company.

Postmedia has been bleeding out for a long time. Several of their papers have been laying off staff for a few years now. They saddled themselves with a huge debt load through several bad business moves including trying to get into the TV game and through several restructurings. They are sitting with a little less than half a billion in debt.

Really unfortunate because they do have some good, historic papers under their banner.

Growing up in Vancouver, the Province was a morning paper and the Sun was delivered late afternoon. When did that change?

You can tell I don't read the paper when I visit home, can't you? :D
