Like Cosmo I've done outdoors vacations solo in the past. I did a week-long backpacking trip many years ago where I went three days without seeing another person. I've spent weekends alone at my cabin many times.

But those were all pre-wife and child.

I used to go down to Florida every year in the dead of winter. Did have a couple friends there, but most of the time I was by myself. Worked out to my advantage because you can do all the crap that you want to do without worrying about someone else.

I went to Europe after college for a couple of months with some guys I knew from school. We all picked different return dates for various reasons (mostly financial). As a result, I was alone for about the last week and 1/2 of my trip and enjoyed it a lot (if memory serves, this was in Valencia, Barcelona, Lyon and Paris). We had been hosteling it and it was good to sort of decompress and fly solo. Not to mention that I had been staying in close quarters with these guys and had stayed faithful to my girlfriend at home, so being alone was an opportunity to beat my dick like it owed me money.

Not that any of that is really analogous to what you're proposing. But it was surprisingly fun in a low-key sort of way. I'd do it again.

I tried once but JR tracked me down. :D

But to be honest, I'd love a solo vacation. When I was single the only vacation I got was going home to see my family (which doesn't really count). Travelling with my man is wonderful (and we travel together extremely well) but I do love me some alone time.

As a single guy in his late 30s, I'm an expert in vacationing alone. I've been doing it for years.

I tend to go to places for a few days or a week and just keep exploring or doing something new each day. In the past decade I've spent a week in NYC at least five times, I go to Chicago regularly, same with Charleston. I almost always go to places where I have friends, that way a day or a meal or two isn't spent alone.

About eight years ago I flew to San Francisco and rented a car, driving south to Carmel for a few days, followed by a few days at a cool resort-like place called Costanoa, followed by a few days in San Francisco.

I did something similar in Maine one summer, as well.

As a lifelong loner, vacationing alone isn't uncomfortable at all for me. There are times, of course, when it would be nice to share an interesting experience with someone, but I also love the freedom of waking up in a place like Chicago or New York and being able to go anywhere in the city I feel like.

I was once went to Vegas for four days alone while I contemplated a big career move. It was great to clear my mind, blow off some steam and just generally have time to myself. I loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat.

If I had it do over again, I would have hit the last minute deals a lot more on the weekends.

But I make more now than when I was single. :(

Just take Monday off and see where the plane will take me.

You can get away for about $400 to $500 pretty easily.

    And Vegas sounds perfect.

Oh, I can be very independent. I don't have no problem eating by myself of walking around by myself.

When you hate most people, it's pretty easy to enjoy some alone time :D

Most of the major national parks run more than one type of tour daily ... I've done that a few times while flying solo (Mammoth Cave, Smokies) and had a good time. Also recommend the major casino markets ... Vegas and Biloxi (especially the Hard Rock and to a lesser extent the IP) are better if you want to party with the masses, with Laughlin and Tunica being better if you want to do things on the cheap and don't mind hanging out with an older crowd.

If you can swing some time off in mid- to late-April, I also recommend hitting up San Antonio's Fiesta, which is a week-long celebration. Spent a night there while moving cross country several years ago and had a blast.
