I'm also happy to see she was granted an exception from being arrested for making a false statement due to her "emotional issues".

But at least she wasn't pregnant.

Jackie is the Trump of her followers:

    • This will not convince them.
    • Even if it does convince them, the important thing is that it advance the discussion about "rape culture."

Ha, holy shit! It even makes that second point at the end of the story! It's like when you had to premise every disagreement with John McCain with a hosanna to his service.

Does Jackie really have followers? I think sane people, no matter how ardently feminist or supportive or women's rights, view Jackie as a mentally unbalanced person who sought attention (not unlike the gay minister who manufactured the story about the anti-gay slur written on the Whole Foods cake) and just leave it at that.

One can think Jackie is mentally ill and delusional AND also think "rape culture" needs to be addressed better.

The two things are not mutually exclusive, despite how much some people try to make them.

Sure, but Jackie's fabrication has zilch to do with "rape culture."

It's as if I wrote a story about the Astros' win last night, and then, at the end, wrote, "That said, Stephen Curry sure did light it up against Oklahoma City."

It's more accurate at this point to say Jackie has contributed to rape culture. Now every reported case and accused rapist can point to UVA and say it was a frame job or a politically motivated stunt.

Baylor is in full meltdown mode after a slew of allegations against athletes, with the bonus of a cover-up by the coaches, and most recently with the indictment of a fraternity president on charges he drugged and assaulted a woman. The administration is under fire for its consistent refusal to acknowledge any problem on campus or act in the interests of female students.

In the absence of the Jackie story, Baylor would be the national case that Erdely craved. But in the aftermath of UVA, there's a lot of dipping the toe in very lightly to the issue.
