Use of "sport" as a verb

    Going with the singular seems pretentious British, don't 'cha think?

    The Globe & Mail, about ten years or so ago, reduced their sports section to two pages and called it "sport".

    The pretentious sod who was the editor at the time didn't think the Globe's readership--"gay stockbrokers" one smartass called them---deigned to play, watch or read about hockey, football, baseball or basketball.

    I think that "reformat" lasted about six months.

    William Shakespeare used it in the quote that is my favorite description of sportswriting:

    If all the year were playing holidays; To sport would be as tedious as to work.

    Maybe I'm missing something ... but annoy IS a verb. There's no other way to use it.

    In the slang of my youth, you "sported" new clothes, new sneakers, a new car or a fine woman on your arm.

    I am guilty as charged in using this ONLY when I have a brain fart and can't think of anything else to write.

    I can't remember the last time I used sport as a verb in any way other than "sporting wood."
