The list of great US soccer victories is certainly a short one.

If they lose to Ghana (which is a better team than Algeria), all will be forgotten.

Yeah, they lose 1-0 on Saturday and it will be "Landon who?"... Let's face it, the US was in one of the weaker groups and needed a goal in stoppage time to get even one win.

I give them a shot against Ghana, but not more than 50/50.

Yeah, the U.S. loses on Saturday and they only make it to the final 16 in the world. Losers.

It came into the tournament ranked 14th. So that is to be expected, no?

    Still a fine achievement.

However, I stand by my pre-tournament prediction:

    I'm halfway there.

The rankings are generally garbage. The fact is that you don't really know where you stand until the World Cup, because you are only playing your own area in qualifying and nobody takes the other international tournaments all that seriously.

The U.S. spent a few decades being non-entities in the soccer world, not even qualifying for the World Cup. They got the host-nation boost to move on to the second round, but since have not looked very good outside of a very lucky run in 2002. Winning the group and losing in the first round solidifies their position in the top 15-20 teams in the world, which is where U.S. fans *hoped* they were but didn't know for sure until they proved it on the field.

I'll be curious to see how this gets played in print in the morning, considering it was over by noon EDT.
