This is a legit outift. I was asked to play on the football team of a similar organization many years back, and I was no star.

It's just an opportunity to travel abroad with sports as an excuse. Or vice versa.

There was no lying in the recruiting process or misleading info. If you think your playing days are over but want to remain competitive, then this is a great outlet. You aren't getting paid to play, but you get rewarded with cultural enlightenment. And it doesn't look too bad on a resume if for no other reason than it's a conversation starter during interviews.
