Marines on the ground in Libya
    3/23/2011 10:00:00 AM

An ABC affiliate in North Carolina says more than 2,000 U.S. Marines are on the ground in Libya.

WCTI-TV in New Bern reports those Marines, assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) at Camp Lejuene, are "preserving the sanctity of the city [of Ajdubiyah] and the safety of the civilians within it."

Capt. Timothy Patrick with the 26th MEU told the station: "In Libya right now they are doing exactly what we need them to do. They are doing what they are told, and right now that's protecting Libyan people against Qadhafi forces."

Evidently the Marines' efforts are being successful. The commanding officer of the 26th MEU, Col. Mark Desens, says that following a second round of strikes by AV-8B Harrier jets, the Libyan dictator's forces "are now less capable of threatening the town than before."

According to the report, the 2,200 Marines with the 26th MEU are nearing the end of their deployment in the Mediterranean area and are due to be replaced with Marines from the 22nd MEU out of Camp Lejeune.

Well, the Marines go from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli...

The article from the ABC affiliate isn't written well enough to clearly determine what the Marines are doing.

Try the Mossad's official blog. They always have the inside story.

The captain is an idiot for saying the Marines were in Libya. I'm guessing the Marines are part of the effort to establish a no-fly zone, but are not on the ground except for a limited amount of time. A press release did say the unit was part of the rescue mission for the two F-15 pilots.

For a journalism website, it helps if posters had reading comprehension before posting. I'm not surprised this came from d_b.

PBS reported it yesterday citing another captain, we're clearly in the fog of a hot war zone here, even with 2 sources saying it. http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/whqr/news.newsmain/article/1/0/1778504/Local.Interest/Camp.Lejeune.Marines.Help.Launch.Airstrikes.on.Libya

You really can't read, can you? Nothing in that story said troops were on the ground in Libya. Marines on ships is a lot different than troops on the ground.

You expect DB to read the stuff he posts?

Still waiting for the Iranian Navy to drop off that illegal shipment of rockets to Gaza and/or Hoboken.

Maybe they were part of rescue mission. From The NYT Lede blog:

"As my colleague Elisabeth Bumiller reports from Washington, "An American pilot and a weapons officer were safely rescued in Libya on Tuesday after their warplane crashed near Benghazi, but the United States Marine Corps dropped two 500-pound bombs during the recovery and faced questions about whether Marines had fired on villagers."

Readers of Tuesday's Lede live blog will know that a video report by Britain's Channel 4 News last night included an interview with a Libyan villager opposed to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi's rule who said that and he and his son were wounded by American forces during the rescue.

While a spokesman for the Marines flatly denied that any shots were fired from the helicopter that picked up the pilot, a press release about the incident on the Marines' Web site, citing "official reports," acknowledged that a "Harrier close air support element dropped two laser-guided 500-pound bombs in the area in support of the downed pilot."

It seems possible that initial reports that villagers had been shot could have been based on a mistaken understanding of what caused their injuries. If they were wounded by the two bombs dropped by the rescue team, both their statements that they were wounded by American forces and the Marine spokesman's initial statement that no shots had been fired from the helicopter were correct."

At least the North Carolina media waited until boots were on the ground to report it.
