I like the nostalgic glow on Harbaugh, who went 29-21 at Stanford. He had one good year. Sure, he brought Stanford to prominence, which is fucking impressive, but I'm not sure he's in the category of the guys who have had consistent success in college just yet.

Stanford played both sides of the ball.

 

Well that's just stupid.

Stanford's records the years before Harbaugh arrived: 2-9, 4-7, 4-7, 5-6, 1-11.

They beat USC his first year as 42-point underdogs.

They went 12-1 his final year (in a four-team playoff like this one, I think they would have come out on top, but that's just my opinion).

Then they went 11-2, 12-2 and 11-3 with the staff he built and the recruits he brought in.

 

Did I not say it was impressive? He built up the program and had one good year. That's great, especially at a place like Stanford, but it's not in the same category as what Saban, Meyer and even Peterson have done.

 

Right. But he also won at San Diego. And he turned around the 49ers.

 

I knew I should have factored in his Pioneer League success.

 

It's just more evidence that he's an outstanding coach. It's not the best evidence.

 

I think we actually agree with each other. I'm not saying Harbaugh isn't a great coach. He is. He just isn't at the level of the top tier of college coaches yet. He'll have plenty of opportunity to prove it.
