It is all in labour costs, or should I say labor costs for our US friends :)

The time it takes to make the booking and to have the UM escorted takes time. It pulls someone out of the work schedule so it is not just a matter of 1 hour multiplied by the hourly salary of the person walking with the UM.

From the gate to the plane, from the plane to the boarding area if there is a connection, the boarding area to the plane, the plane to the meeting area, checking the credentials of the person picking up the UM.

You would be suprised how often airlines have heard "oh little Johnny is there now...I don't get off work for another hour and then I will be there"

Some airlines will not book UM on flights that have connections which is a smart policy. Some airlines will not allow UM at all which I think is an even smarter policy. If you need your child to fly cross country get on the plane with him/her.
