    This is true regardless of which part of the operation to which an employee contributes.

    Whether it is a photographer, reporter, columnist, copy editor, desk/layout guy, editor or manager, there should be some leeway granted for passion/interest -- attitude, if you will -- depending on the extent of it and the reasons for it.

    Someone willing to make waves for the sake of the product should not necessarily be labeled a problem or a trouble-maker, as often happens, sometimes keeping people from speaking up when they otherwise should, or might.

    (This is what appears to have occurred in the recent case of the Orange County Register and the problematic Whicker column).
