You know, it might make business sense; and it might get nods of approval from plenty of travelers. But something tells me the first time an underpaid, overworked United flight attendant tells a Ruby*-sized paying customer that they need to get off a flight because they are too fat, this whole concept will fall apart. Most heavy people I know would pitch a fit to high heaven that will disrupt the boarding process to no end.

In other words, this might work on paper at United's headquarters, but it simply won't fly in the not-so-friendly real-world skies.

And that's how Ruby winds up on the terrorist no-fly list.

Yes. And you're not the one we're talking about (unless you've put on about 200 pounds since I last saw you).

This isn't for heavy people. This is for people who literally can't lower the armrests, who take up a seat and a half. This is for well beyond the standard definition of "obese."

I'm a big guy (big, and overweight, too), and I understand this logic.

Reason 5 billion, though, why I will never fly anything but JetBlue again. I don't spill over in their seats.

One of a dozen reasons to pick that airline.

Not bullshit. I'm paying for my space. If you're in it, that's a problem.

Every airline should institute this rule immediately.

Don't like it? Lose 100 lbs.

Forget fat people, what realy upsets me during flights is when people get up to take a piss. Go before you board! It's common courtesy. Assholes.

What about people who keep score on the flight?
