    25 years ago or so, when it easier to fly and change reservations without penalty, my buddy would play the "bump game," buying tickets for flights he was pretty sure he would get bumped from to collect the prizes.

    He even had a friend who worked at an airline who would alert him to full flights. He collected a lot of free miles and vouchers that way.

    It's a game show already when you check into a Delta kiosk and they ask you to bid for how much you'd take for a potentially oversold flight. All that's missing is the studio audience begging you to bid $1.

    Instead of bidding $1 over and getting the stink eye from a competitor, you get it for bidding $1 less.

    Uh. When you don't show up 15 minutes before the flight, those seats are released and can be filled by the airline without asking for volunteers.
