I think I own only 10 or 11 of those albums.
Criminally missing from that list: Slaid Cleaves ("Broke Down", "Wishbones" or "Everything You Love Will be Left Behind"); Dan Bern ("New American Language", "My Country II", or "Breathe"), Tift Merritt ("Bramble Rose" or "Tamborine"), The Jayhawks ("Rainy Day Music"), Old 97s ("Satellite Rides" or "Drag It Up"), Rod Picott ("Summerbirds"), Shelby Lynne ("I Am Shelby Lynne"), Allison Moorer ("The Hardest Part"), Marah ("Kids in Philly" or "20,000 Streets Under the Sky"), Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers ("Sonoran Hope & Madness" or "Americano"), Josh Ritter ("The Animal Years" or "Historical Conquests of.."), Son Volt ("Okemah and the Melody of Riot", "The Search", or "American Central Dust"), Dar Williams ("The Green World"), Lucinda Williams ("Essence"), Waco Brothers ("New Deal" or "Freedom and Weep")

This list still sucks. Also, Animal Collective is one of the most overrated bands of the decade.

And along those lines, Paste says "Illinoise" by Sufjan Stevens is the best album of the decade. I feel better and better about letting my subscription lapse. Over a span of just a couple of years Paste went from pretty good to suffocatingly pretentious.

  9. I don't think these lists are all that "pretentious," and I don't think anyone is trying to pretend to enjoy these albums to up their hipness quotient.

More than any decade, the industry has fragmented, just like most other industries. There are few huge albums any more. No "Ten." No "Rumors." No "Thriller." I'm not pretentious whatsoever, and I think that the most interesting music being made nowadays by far is in the indie rock and alternative country/Americana genres. I don't have a huge problem with the Sufjan Stevens album being ranked that high. It's not a party album, for sure, but it's really thoughtful and ambitious and not at all inaccessible, either. I'd listen to it over, say, the Killers every day and twice on Sunday.

That being said ... I sure wouldn't have minded Buckcherry slipping onto one of these lists at some slot.

Journal For Plague Lovers by the Manics is an obvious exclusion, IMO.

To clarify... I don't think picking Sufjan Stevens is all that pretentious, and I don't really have a problem with Paste making it number one. Wouldn't be my choice, and I found it amusing since someone had made a Sufjan comment in relation to Pitchfork on this thread.

I do, however, find Paste unbelievably pretentious and borderline unreadable at this stage. The final straw for me was the "world music" issue: an entire issue dedicated to music from Africa and Eastern Europe that I will never hear, have no interest in, and will never read one word about again. For a monthly magazine, that struck me as the equivalent of printing "Go fuck yourself" on the first page and leaving the rest of the magazine blank.

People who publish subjective rankings/opinions that differ from mine anger me.
I'm glad there's a place for me to express my umbrage.
