I put part of the blame on football spots directly on the players. How many times do you see a guy get tackled then throw the ball 2-3 yards forward? If I were in charge of a football league I'd tell players/coaches/ADs/GMs that any time a player doesn't simply release the ball, the officials will be instructed to be a little fuzzy on where the spot is. After a time or two of a spot getting moved back because of it, that would stop.

This just in: Infielders occasionally miss ground balls, pitchers don't put every pitch in the spot they want to and hitters foul off pitches they should hit for home runs.

This just in: it's the infielders', pitchers' and hitters' game to win or lose and they are the ones people come to see, not the officials.

Not sure I am understanding the analogy, if it is meant to be an analogy. ... Unless you want to expand it to say something like, "hitters foul off pitches they should hit for home runs, and they sometimes accidentally get ruled home runs anyhow."

An absolute home run of an idea. Best-case scenario for what is becoming more and more of an embarrassment of a situation.

Short version: Nobody's perfect. Don't hold four people on the field to that impossible standard.

If someone is wrong a lot (Bob Davidson), get rid of them. Otherwise, live with the imperfection because it's in every other aspect of the game.

Good idea, bad execution. Old people suck in this situation - they take WAY too long. The last people you want making a quick decision is retirees.

Get some younger people who know what the F they are doing. This isn't rocket science.

Not holding four people on the field to an impossible standard. I am saying that unlike 40 years ago, they have technology that can quickly increase the odds that they get the officiating right and it doesn't influence a game. Isn't the object of what the umpires do to get it right, not "live with the imperfection"?

And again, the difference between the imperfections of the players and the imperfections of the umpires is that the actions of the players are supposed to determined the outcome of the game. The performance of the umpires is not supposed to determine the outcome of the game. They are on the field for one reason -- to make correct calls. In so much as as they don't always make correct calls, and there is a way to help fix that without it taking a lot of time or change to the game, why wouldn't anyone be in favor of it?

What you said. Get rid of the Bob Davidsons, the Angel Hernandezs, the CB Bucknors, the Sam Holbrooks, the Tim Tschidas, the Phil Cuzzis... there ARE really good umpires in baseball. The problem is this is becoming a big issue that threatens to overwhelm the game if it isn't addressed in a proper matter. The problem here is Bud Selig won't do a damn thing about it.

    Dear Sen. Bunning,

You no longer play baseball and the economy is still in shambles, why don't you please shut the hell up and DO YOUR JOB!! Considering most senators would be doing great to get one in five of thier calls right on a regular basis!!

    sincerely,

    taxpayer

Because there is no way to do routine calls efficiently. How long does replay take in an NFL game?

How minute do you want to get? Do you want to start calling the "phantom" tag of second base on a double play, using slo mo to determine if the fielder was on the bag and in possession of the ball at exactly the same time?

The outcome of a September game between the Pirates and Nationals may hang in the balance.
