Yet because it is in SI, it has immediate credibility and all MLB umpires end up under unfair scrutiny again. Utter BS is the best description I've seen.

Well, hell. This isn't hard to narrow down.

Unit threw seven complete game victories in 1993 with Vaille catching.

    4/21 - 4-hit shutout v/Red Sox, Jim McKean ump.
    4/26 - allowed 3 runs v/Indians, Tim Welke ump.
    5/16 - 1-hitter, 14Ks v/As, Dale Scott ump.
    8/20 - 3 hits, 1 run v/Blue Jays, Ken Kaiser ump.
    9/5 - 2 runs, 5 hits v/Brewers, Joe Brinkman ump.
    9/21 - 1 hit shutout v/Randers, Ed Hickox ump.
    10/1 - 9 hits, 2 runs v/Twins, Drew Cable ump.

Tommy Craggs narrowed the field, somewhat.

    Two things here.....

    1. He's 6'10.....what's the ump gonna call...a screw ball.....no, you goofy-testicle shitting rectal wart....throw the ol number one about letter high, and shut up. How much help did Valle need?

    2. From this list of umpires, I would bet you that it isn't Kaiser....that man had the largest strike zone from anyone not named Eric Gregg.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if an umpire said, "Let me call the next one" or "Let me call the pitches for the next hitter." But there's no way I could see an umpire calling pitches for nine innings. For one thing, it would be too much work. Most umpires bitch about how hard they have to work just calling balls and strikes.

Somebody ought to ask MLB about this. They can investigate and either confirm it happened, or call total bullshit on another convenient SI anecdote. If the integrity of the umpires is being challenged in a magazine as widely circulated as SI, they should be concerned.
