    Myth.
For the record, I would never stoop to downloading a U2 album. Ever.

It's 2009 and there's no fucking way I'm paying for anything less than a Beatles reunion (with a Christ-esque Lennon and Harrison rebirth) or a worthy independent artist.

I think U2 will survive the hit.

And here we have a reminder of the bigger problem that is killing newspapers and hurting many other industries: A generation that has been raised to think everything should be free. Entertainment, information .... it's all free!

They don't care how it gets to them or whose property it is, and they don't even consider what they're doing wrong.

I fall somewhere between the two schools of thought on display here. On the one hand, I feel like I should support my favorite artists by buying their music, but on the other hand, I hate the way the recording industry has raped and pillaged its customers for so long.

I'm happy to shell out my monthly eMusic subscription, because I find the cost to be reasonable for what I get, and I happily paid $3.99 for the new U2 album today. I will not, however, continue to pay $15.99 for a CD I can download for free.

Like the newspaper business, the recording industry needs to evolve to match the changing marketplace.

Sorry, I like my music with as little an amount of pretentious douchebaggery as possible. Thanks, though.

This generation is a bunch of fucking freeloaders.

    Absolutely true.

No. Taking something for nothing is stealing.

    Plain and simple.

I didn't say they should give it away for free, but to continue to charge $10 or more for a digital download is ludicrous. Something like $3-5 for a 128-bit rate mp3 album seems reasonable to me.

It seems reasonable to you because you're not the one who invested three years of your life to write the album.

We can argue all day about this but at the end of the day, you're a thief.

Now, I'm not saying downloading is wrong. Hell, do it. But once you decide want to keep the music, the artists should be compensated. I've used Limewire and programs like it to weed out potential bombs and also to justify buying an entire album vs. a couple of tracks.

If you're not willing to pony up $10 for a CD then you don't deserve to have the music.
