U.S. to recognize Libyan rebels as official government

Frees up some frozen assets for the rebels, but doesn't look like it will lead to peace any time soon:

Rebel fighters in the mountains south of Tripoli said that if being recognized by the United States allows them to secure more guns, they applaud the decision. But opposition soldiers are united in their refusal to accept any “road map” forward that includes Gaddafi and his inner circle.

“No, it is impossible. He is a cancer and he needs to be removed,” said Col. Muhammad Khabasha, a top commander in the town of Zintan, where a few thousand men have been fighting since February.

“Gaddafi will not leave without violence. The West must understand this,” Khabasha said. “Gaddafi has eight sons, who have each been brought in power, to have power, each with an army of people behind them. These people will not leave until the last minute.”

I really don't see any good coming with either group. They're not going to wave American flags in a victory march, not even close.

Wasn't it similar comments by Gaddafi that caused us to get involved in Libya in the first place?

Speaking at a news conference in Benghazi, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, the head of the Transitional National Council, said Colonel Qaddafi’s loyalist fighters had until Saturday to negotiate a surrender. The offer related primarily to the coastal town of Surt, the fugitive leader’s hometown and a focus of support for him, but also covered loyalist strongholds at Bani Walid and in the southern oasis town of Sabha.

Mr. Abdel-Jalil said that if the deadline passed with “no peaceful indications for implementing this, we will decide this matter militarily.”

“We do not wish to do so but we cannot wait longer,” he said.

As bad as Gaddafi was, they should not slaughter or execute his loyalists.
