It would have been cooler had the mistakes not been in the book.

None of you are wrong . . . though it's always been a problem, to
varying degrees. I've done a couple of copyediting/proofing book
jobs in my time, and to me, it's enormously-satisfying work.

. . . not that everyone's caught them all, yet, but point remains that
they rushed to put that thing out, despite the gajillion errors embedded, therein.

    Isn't it Gumbel?

As Swenk and other people in the biz will attest, book publishing is having the same issues as other industries. They're doing "more with less" and the first place to cut back is in junior positions like proof reading.

And the rest of the editors are under the gun to cut down the time from receipt of original ms to finished book.

And yeah, the number of typos and grammatical errors which would have been unforgivable even ten years ago are on the rise.

  6. It sounds like you might need glasses... maybe a pair of those Precious Roy Cat Scan Glasses.

I love that in pointing out the incorrect spelling of Bryant Gumbel, it was corrected with a different incorrect spelling. It's worth something that this incorrect spelling is slightly closer to the actual spelling.

Was listening to a French language book on tape and caught an incorrect translation, too. They said "English" when the correct translation was "French."

It's not even limited to print books.

Chuck Klosterman doesn't even have to write a book (or article) for it to be filled with typos: http://www.twitlonger.com/show/18fnr1
