There are two more huge fires torching Southern California. Both started last night, fanned by 60 mph Santa Ana winds.
Santa Ana winds blow toward the ocean, the opposite direction of normal offshore breezes. Most of the region's most devastating fires are the result of Santa Ana winds.
The fire in Santa Paula might reach the Pacific Ocean. At 10:45 a.m., the wind is still blowing like crazy.

On top of the winds going toward the shore rather than away from it, the Santa Ana winds are drier and warmer.

This state really could use a break from this kind of stuff. This has to be one of its not the worst year for fires in California.

These are unusual. Dryer and warmer are likely with Santa Anas. It was in the 40s and 50s last night, but still dry. It is mid 60s now at noontime, going down to mid 40s tonight. Supposed to warm up as the week progresses, and will remain windy.

Why don't wildfires draw the same kind of passion from the public as storms?

All are devastating, but the country rallies around storm-ravaged areas such as New Orleans and Houston, donating money and holding benefit concerts, but fires are greeted with a shrug outside of where they occurred.

There was a good-sized benefit concert for Napa/Sonoma fire relief last month at AT&T Park. Tim Flannery's band also did a fundraiser for fire victims recently. So, they're there, but don't get as much play as the hurricane efforts.

I think a lot of it is in the buildup. You know the storm is coming and you're watching projections for a week, in some cases the entire Gulf of Mexico or from Key West to N.C. and beyond are on pins and needles. That's just a lot more people than a fire, even a big one.

And The Weather Channel. Hurricanes make for good TV, as bad as that sounds.

I worked (and played lunch-time volleyball) less than a half mile from the Little Mountain fire. Drove that hill five days a week to get to our apartment in north San Bernardino.

    Because wildfires happen in California.
