    Very powerful photo.

Police chief's son and nephew were the killed officers. Damn.

That's what jumped out to me too. Not that it's obviously what should be the top thing right now, but aren't there generally nepotism rules or some such? Weird he could have TWO direct relatives working for him.

I'll be interested to see if the Commercial Appeal (or any paper for that matter) runs that in print.

Looks like the other dead suspect's arm is by the real wheel.

My cousin's a cop up in the Twin Cities and was involved in a huge manhunt recently. A few weeks ago, two guys carjacked a guy. An officer came upon them awhile later. The guys killed him before he even got his seatbelt off. Like this, it was one of those situations where whichever cop would have been there would have been killed. Just pure dumb luck. Short time later, one of the suspects attacked another cop with a pipe and beat the hell out of him. They fought for his gun, the cop won and killed him. They found the other suspect a short time later.

Cops get a ton of criticism and much of it is warranted. But then you hear stories like this one and it just drives it home again how even their most routine days can end in horror.

Absolutely terrible. Such a tragedy for the families.

An off duty officer was killed last night in Chicago, so I was already upset about this kind of thing. This story doesn't help.

The Chicago cop was apparently killed during an attempted robbery of his motorcycle right in front of his home. His father, a retired cop, killed one suspect and wounded another.

The guy had just gotten back from his second tour of duty Iraq.

Sorry for the threadjack, just didn't think we need two similar threads.

It appears that photo, if the details in the story are accurate, depicts the dead body of the 16-year-old boy involved. I'm not avocating not running it, but that's what immediately struck me about the picture.
