I made it well into adulthood before I handled a gun. Don't even recall seeing one up close other than on a police officer's hip.
At a family gathering in the country, a bunch of relatives broke out the weapons. It was really cool. Got to shoot a bunch of different pistols, an M1 Garand, a couple of shotguns, even a Mac-10. The Mac-10 was startling, almost frightening, how fast the bullets spit out. I think I shot a clip in about three seconds.
My wife had a couple of handguns when we got married that we keep for home defense now. One's a revolver, one a little .22 Derringer. I'd like to get a Glock, but can't justify to myself spending $600 for something I'll shoot once or twice a year at most. Plus I feel more comfortable with the revolver. It's pretty idiot proof for a novice like me. I don't want to deal with a jammed pistol if I ever have to use it in a real emergency, God forbid, or accidentally leave one in the chamber if I'm loading/unloading it.

As for drugs, never done them and never will. Dad was an alcoholic, so I swore off booze when I was a teenager. Drugs were a logical extension of that. I've never been drunk or high unless you count anesthetic for surgery. I've been to plenty of parties where pot was around, maybe some pills too for all I know, but have been fortunate to have friends who respect my decision and never forced it on me or ostracized me for not partaking. If anything heavier than alcohol was about to get broken out, they gave me a heads up so I could leave the room or did it out of sight.
I think they either appreciated having a designated driver or thought I would go all Bible Thumper, "You're going to HELL!" on them, but the truth is I just don't care. Do what you want to yourself, just don't expect me to do it and don't ask me to clean up the mess.
Kind of why I bristle when people make fun of the old "Just say no" campaign. It's a good, sensible idea to aim at kids. And it's not that hard.

Just say no has been a very effective campaign.
