    Don't know if you guys followed that deal much, but West basically lied repeatedly and pretended Coates was an Obama booster, and seemed totally unfamiliar with any of Coates' actual work. He just clearly felt threatened by/jealous of the new cool black intellectual.

    That’s a stunning simplication of West’s critique.

    West’s primary critique is that Coates is a fatalist who presents “white supremacy” as so total and overwhelming that his arguments seem designed to please and empower white liberals more than they speak to black Americans. Whether one agrees or disagrees with that critique, that, to me, is part of what it is. I read Coates and see him trading agency for fashionable, profitable despair.

    “Cornel West is a jealous liar” seems a little biased to me.
