    Smart, smart hire. Big jobs come open these days, and you realize there are great writers who are out of work before you even get to writers at other papers. Happy for Mike ...

    Good for Mike. I've known editors, though, who decide on their own that someone who has been a columnist never will be happy "going back" to beat work. So they don't bother with such hires.

    Same sort of stupidity that decides that someone who has been laid off shouldn't be contact by the paper that laid him off, once a job gets posted that can be filled. Or that someone would be committed enough if they had to take a pay cut so they let them go entirely, so they have a 100% cut.
