Trying to get back into sports journalism

    Especially in an era where, as the announcements proclaim, they want writers who can go beyond the routine gamer.

    Not only that, but actually being hired as a coach — particularly if it's a paying gig — says something about your abilities as a journalist, in my mind. It tells me that you demonstrated enough of an understanding and/or interest during your time covering the sport that someone respected you enough to want to hire you to coach. It also tells me they trusted you to be part of a team. Those are both big pluses for me.

    Try college sports information. Many of our shops are looking for in-house feature writers now.
