Then, NIKE starts paying them as 8th graders and ordering them to go to specific high schools and colleges.

    Ooops, that's already happening anyway.

Paying players over the counter isn't going to happen . . . though if it somehow did, why don't we just hand the keys to the SEC whoremasters, Southern Cal and a handful of additional, select prime offenders, and be done with it? Because no one else will be able to compete, and the SEC will pretend they're something special.

They are -- but not in the way they think.

The evil Ess-Eee-see made Ohio State cheat.

Oh, Ohio State is among the prime offenders . . . but the NCAA doesn't have the heart to hand them three years' pro.

When was the last time a Big 10 football team was on major probation (Bowl ban, tv ban, significant loss of scholarships- 20 percent or more)?

To paraphrase Bruce Jenkins (sfgate) who was paraphrasing Jerry Tarkanian,

"the NCAA is really mad at Tressel/OSU so they're cracking down on Cleveland State."

He is jolly isn't he? I always try to find a good way to describe him. Jolly. It fits.

Dez Bryant got suspended for an entire season for lying to the NCAA about something he feared was a rules violation, but actually wasn't. So if there's proof that Tressel lied to the NCAA about known rules violations -- and simply not reporting those violations is a violation itself -- then I would hope the hammer drops on Tressel.

Suspend him 12 months or more. No coaching, no recruiting trips, no nothing. It's the only way the NCAA will truly be able to make a point to coaches who don't care about the rules. Kids like Bryant, you expect them to mess up along the way. Coaches like Tressel, you expect more from them in a leadership position.

Never do it. The Big Ten dies as a competitive conference without The Ohio State Penitentiary, and the Big Ten Network takes a hit too. You can go after an Alabama or an Auburn or what-have-you because the rest of the SEC will pick up the slack.

The NCAA shouldn't care about the fallout. If they can hand down a tough punishment that includes a postseason ban to a program like USC, it should have no trouble doing the same to THE Ohio State University.

FWIW, 7 p.m. press conference today with the university president, Tressel and the AD.

Nope. If they pulled this delayed suspension shit with the Sugar Bowl, they won;t sack up with this....
Golle Gee, Big Gene and Sweater Vest are going to say "they're looking into the matter..."
