Travel thread

Thought I'd accomplish two things with this post.

    1. Start a much needed multi-purpose travel thread - since everyone is always asking for advice on where to go, what to do etc.

    and...

    2. Get some information on what I should do in Vegas. I'm leaving in a week and a half and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for my friends and I (must-see attractions, cool bars, heated pools that my buddies and I can sneak into, etc.)

We're staying at the Flamingo, but the pool isn't open until March 15. We're also sort of on a budget, one of the travelers is unemployed (not sure why he's going) and this time off furlough time that I had to take instead of vacation time. So, spending the entire weekend at the Spearmint Rhino, or the high-rollers tables at the Bellagio are out of the question.

    Oh, we're also all first-time Vegas-goers.

Well fancy that. I always thought that was a thread for journalists who were on the road for work-related stuff. But I'm never on the road so I never checked it. Sorry about the DB.

Get the fuck out of Vegas and go see the Hoover Dam and Canyon.

I went to Vegas a couple of summers ago, and found it to be a general waste of time and resources.

Later in life I plan to make a separate trip for that. The Canyon, Hoover Dam, Yellowstone, Great Redwoods... all the cool stuff the west has to offer.

I'm hoping to go to Vegas late in the year/early next year for a friend's potential wedding. So mustang, let me know what you figure out. :D

I found a place that has dollar pancakes after midnight. Which might be the coolest thing ever... But yeah, I'll keep you posted.

There are multiple Vegas threads on these boards, and our SJ gathering thread from March '07 should still be around, too. Those should help get you started.

If budget is a concern, do your hardcore drinking on Fremont Street, not the Strip. The alcohol is just as potent, but 1/10th the price in old Vegas.

Eff that. Gimme the booze and poker tables. You people can have your Hoover Dams and your Canyons. Zzzzzzz.

That's what happens when you walk into the first casino you see and bet all of your walking around money on 13 Black.
