Trading in for miles

Someone I know traded in a three-year-old minivan (14 mpg, he says) today and got a new Scion sedan (36 mpg he says) and $7,000 to boot.

He drives 11,000 miles a year to work and back.

Anyone else done, or thought of doing, anything like that?

I sold a 1986 Buick that got 12 mpg for $50 and bought a 2007 Dodge Caliber that gets 25/33 mpg for $17k. Does that count?

Damn - where did that happen now?

I have a 1989 Honda that gets 50 mpg in the city. It kind of sucks to ride it in the rain, though.

I do make the conscious decison to ride it to and from work more often than I did before gas prices went up.
