Track meet called off due to lightning just before record

I agree that the safety comes first, but people burying their head in the sand about high school sports is pretty dumb, too.

They don't become unimportant because you're tired of parents calling in about it. High school sports mean a lot more than they did 30 years ago, and records mean a lot more.

If that's true, then the dad has a legit gripe.

Obviously the dad acted like an asshole, but he was probably just shocked as hell. He should have just calmed down and apologized. Aren't they rescheduling the event for Monday anyway?

That's great and all. And no one will care about the record if someone gets struck by lightning and killed.

Someone needs to explain that to the dad.

I fully understand the safety issue here, and support it.

This is about the "high school sports don't mean anything" deal.

These young freshman studs in college sports don't come straight out of the womb, you know.

One could argue there are more people interested in that track score than there are in the Dodgers-Rockies score today.

Of course, he could have pulled a hammy three strides later...

About five years ago, there was a young f'in stud who was about to go to Penn State as a DB. He was also the state's top sprinter.

His 4x100 team was favored to win the state title, but two of his teammates messed up the handoff before they got to his anchor leg and finished out of the money.

The kid immediately scratched himself out of the open 100.

Somebody in the press tent asked, "What happened to so-and-so?" And our boys' track writer never missed a beat with his reply: "Sprained vagina, I believe."
