The Star attacks against Ford have been issue-based and have been nothing like the Sun's vitriol (still) against former mayor Miller. Sue-Anne Levy thinks Miller's first name is "socialist".

The Sun loves him so much, only days ago they gave an editor's position to his now-former press secretary, who has exactly zero relevant journalism experience. This while the chain is shedding 400 jobs less than a month before Christmas, which seems to be a running theme with that corporation.

Equivalent move by the Star, as it pertains to Ford or anyone else? Oh, wait, there isn't one.

Seems like you're missing a real opportunity. But you're right, Trailer Park Boys would be more current.

    I'd vote for Jim Leahy.

"Who in this city of Toronto, or even in the whole world, doesn't have problems? Who doesn't have a drink too many times once in a while and maybe even winds up passed out in their own driveway, pissing themselves? Who doesn't drink too much sometimes or who doesn't have a puff from time to time? And who doesn't have problems with the people they love? This is our home. This is our community. I am Jim Lahey, and I am your Mayor!"

    JR,

Your issue-based point is interesting, but there is more to it than that. Yes, the newspaper does attack Ford on certain things which are very relevant, but you cannot deny it is after him with some very sharp knives.

There is one columnist I can't read anymore because he's such an anti-Ford one-trick pony. Using The Sun as defence is no answer. Just because it's biased against Miller or pro-Ford is no better.

It is very sad that the two major local-oriented dailies cannot provide a proper perspective into city council. You cannot get an honest perception from either.

Elliotte, the Star has never made any bones about its political persuasion: it's a liberal newspaper.

Why shouldn't they go after the mayor or Canada's largest city, a mayor who, after a year on the job, is clearly beyond his depth and whose policies may eventually wreck the city?

Without going back and actually digging up articles, the Star's complaints against Ford have been and are about his policies, his brother's increasing role as the spokesperson for the city and the flagrant disingenuousness of Ford's attempt to claim the city is in serious financial straits. What's ever been wrong about that?

And sorry, the Sun's attacks on Miller have always been nastier and notoriously ad hominem.

If you want to read a less biased version of Toronto City Council, read the Globe but Marcus Gee and others are just as unrelenting in their criticism of Ford as The Star.

    JR,

We agree to disagree. It's not simply one newspaper attacking this mayor on the issues, while another newspaper "nastily" attacked the previous one. You said it, The Star is the "liberal" paper -- which is fine -- but, Ford, who does not share that viewpoint, never had a chance with it.

Not to derail a Journalism thread but I am curious how Rob Ford has been disingenuous about the city's financials?

How did he get elected anyway? Seems an odd choice for Toronto?

Somebody challenged them to try to top Mel Lastman.

In all seriousness, Ford's primary opposition would have had trouble winning an election for dog catcher, and now he works for a radio talk show.

And in the ultimate fail, it was an election John Tory could finally have won if he had only run. But, because he's John Tory and never met a sidewalk crack he couldn't trip over, he didn't run - and now he hosts that very same radio talk show.
