Top Stories of 2011 (Updated 10/15/11)

    I think it'd be fun to keep a running tab of top news stories of 2011. As they come about I'll update the list in the original post. Right now I can think of 2 stories that stand way above the rest as by far the biggest of 2011 so far -- and they could go in either order depending on how they turn out and where in the world you're viewing them from -- so consider this a very, very tentative ranking.

    1. bin Laden killed
    2. Arab Spring
    3. Japan earthquake/Fukushima meltdown
    4. Tucson shootings
    5. Weather woes (Brutal winter weather, devastating tornadoes, massive floods)
    6. Global economic woes (slow U.S. recovery, Greece, Italy, British austerity)
    7. Casey Anthony trial (Is this really worthy?)
    8. LeBron's gets comeuppance/Mavs win NBA title

    4. The constant snow and ice storms this winter. Won't be a "major" story by December, most likely -- certainly not on the same level as those first two you listed -- but right now it's huge.

    Here are my predicitions->

    1. Healthcare reform overturned in the SC on the basis that you can't force people to buy insurance.
    2. Gas prices hit $4 in the summer.
    3. Unemployment dwindles, the market stabilizes, things look up for Obama in terms of the economy.
    4. At least one major celebrity dies. (My money is on someone completely unexpected).
    5. Tucson massacre, more specifically, Giffords' recovery. She'll be doing interviews by July.
    6. September 11th anniversary, 10 years later.
    7. The Miami Heat get slaughtered by the Celtics in the EC Finals. Celtics fall to Lakers in the NBA Finals, PJ retires.
    8. Captain America blows up the box office.
    9. Katie Couric fired.
    10. Dick Clark dies.
