Maybe I should been posting this in the music thread or in the "what you're listening to now" thread, but I felt in honor of the holiday break it out into its own thread:

TOP 5 SONGS FOR JULY 4

    1. God Bless America - Kate Smith
    2. Fourth of July - Dave Alvin (or Robert Earle Keen)
    3. Back in the USA - Chuck Berry
    4. Star Spangled Banner - Preferably an orchestra/instrumental version, but the Whitney Houston version will do too (almost forgot to put this one in)
    5. Sandy (4th of the July, Asbury Park) - Bruce Springsteen

    other contenders:
    * This Land Is Your Land - Woody Guthrie
    * American Music - The Blasters
    * American Thing - John Eddie
    * Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen (I couldn't put a song about a Vietnam Vet being shit on by his country in the top 5)
    * American Woman - The Guess Who (or Lenny Kravitz)
    * America (aka "My Country 'tis of Thee") - written by by Rev. Samuel F. Smith (don't know who recorded it)
    * Living in the USA - Steve Miller Band
    * America - Neil Diamond

any others that should be added to the play list?

I stood outside Fulton County Stadium after a Braves game one July 4 as they played Born in the USA to the fireworks show. Guy standing next to me starting laughing at the same time I did - he turns to me and says, "You'd think they'd have a clue that this is a protest song." You'd think.

We're walking away afterward and The Queen says, "It IS?"

As a Canuck, these songs make me think of America for some reason:

    Little Pink Houses - Mellencamp
    Glory Days - Springsteen

PS - There's only one rendition of American Woman that counts and it's by that bunch of Canuckistanis
