First off, players like Larry Bird come along not too often in the NCAA Tournament (meaning ones who are that good, and advance to the Final Four or finals).
Bird was recognized for his defense early in his Celtic career and he averaged just under a block a game, plus two steals a game over that pro career.
I can't immediately say who might be on that level with Bird when he was in the NCAA tourney. Danny Manning? (He defended pretty well.) Akeem Olajuwon (he defended well but was surrounded with three some decent starting talent.)
Iverson? (He was Big East defender of the year a few times and his teams went to the round of 16 and 8 before he left early.)
Cleaves doesn't beat Fla. in 2000 without distributing to teammates and helping defend. But he's not even among the NCAA Tourney all-time elite, IMHO.
Bird was one of the best passers I ever saw, along with Magic. And we know Magic was a good defender, too.
Let's not even put Wilt and Russell in this conversation. Their height made them obvious NCAA Tourney defensive specialists.

To finalize my retort based on what you said, Larry Birds NEVER come along without showing up at least in the Final Four and probably the final game.

    Collins does not belong.

    Here's who does:

    Jordan Crawford
    Wayne Chisolm
    Omar Samhan
Draymond Green even though he's not a starter

I think the Smith kid from Duke needs a mention. He was fantastic yesterday.

My God, Joe Mazzulla was 3-for-21 in his last four games before John Wall started giarding him.

Wayne Chism and Gordon Hayward are the two best players I've seen.
Neither are the most talented players but in terms of what they mean to their respective teams and how they make them better, I think that fits the bill.
