So they play the race card. As a black man, are you offended by the likes of Jennine Garafalo and others using racism to explain away each and every instance of disagreement with Obama's policies?

--I think it's a gray area. It's not an all-or nothing proposition, but unfortunately that is how things are debated in the media nowadays. No nuance whatsoever. But that 'birther' stuff? That was always bullshit, and it was always steeped in racism. (And yes I know the Clinton campaign were the ones who fanned those flames first, and I don't forgive that easily. But it was kept alive by the Republican Party and the Tea Party for the same ugly political reasons, and targeted at the same groups of voters. And those groups were very receptive to the message, and there are reasons for that.)

Can people not disagree with the president, who just happens to be black? Why do liberals feel the need to be so ultra-protective of Obama? Is it because they do not think he can handle himself? That a black man needs handled with kid gloves?

-I'm not sure if you're trying to get a rise out of me with the 'kid gloves' thing, but I'm not going to take that bait. The left is not ultra-protective of Obama; if you haven't noticed he takes/is taking as much heat from the progressives as he is the Tea Party folks. All Presidents take heat and are criticized, as they should be.
Here is my problem with the Tea Party, which I first saw popping up in those McCain/Palin rallies in September/October 2008: It seems to me to be a group of people who have always been, and will always be, vehemently opposed to Obama. Many of them might be purely on ideological grounds. There are others--and I'd argue more than an insignificant amount--who are opposed because of his race.
But if these deficits were big enough problems, where was the Tea Party during the GWB administration? Hell, where were they during the Reagan administration? It seems to me that this is a mix of libertarians, social conservatives and (yes) some old-school racists that have found a home in the Tea Party. I think it's a similar group to the one that popped up during the '92 election (Pat Buchanan/Ross Perot). I see it as new paint on an old house, honestly. Maybe there are others on the board who have covered politics for longer that would back up or refute my analysis, but there it is.

Sorry if that ruffles any feathers. That is my honest assessment of it.

Honest and very well put. I like your analogy to Perot/Buchanan in '92. I've been thinking there's a better than even chance that Romney gets the GOP nod and a 3rd-party candidate rises with significant support along those lines. Very thoughtful. Thanks.
