Not as wild as these eight-man games, but Friday night the main team in our area won its game 46-42, scoring 14 points in the final 5 minutes to win. There was 1,020 yards of total offense in the game, first time a combined total's been over 1,000 in the 18 years I've been here. It's the most points the school has ever allowed and still won the game.

After one period of play, it was 0-0. The losing team, which finished with 450 yards of total offense, had only 9 yards on 6 plays and no first downs. The winning team had only 76 total yards. Then the backup running back went in and popped off 10-yard-plus runs on the first three plays of the second quarter and scored on the fourth play.

If WJ could've just managed a field goal, now we're talking.

I remember a team we played in the 70s had four straight scoreless ties when there wasn't overtime. They were 0-0-4, then won 7-3 on an interception. Then we beat them 47-0.

It was probably a lot closer than the scoreboard indicated.

Took an eight-man score tonight that was fairly unremarkable -- 48-14 -- but the stats were goofy.
The winning team only ran 13 offensive plays and gained 249 yards (a 19.2-yard average per play). They also had 186 rushing yards on nine carries. Scored on the first play of the game, as well as a punt and kickoff return.
The losing team ran 33 offensive plays and gained 3 rushing yards on 16 attempts.

First game I ever covered -- September of '89 -- was Verbum Dei at Poly. Poly won 20-0. Its defensive ends were Don Sasa and Willie McGinest.

Also covered the first game at Compton's new field.

Anyway, pretty funny little thing in the lede to the 99-9 game ...

    Almost?
