It's something everyone suspected. But now he's out and proud.

He also went to Auburn. Why should I care about either?

Good for him. This wasn't a huge secret, of course, but what he did was cool if it helps get this conversation out of the way yet again so it doesn't have to be a conversation anymore. Cook wasn't hiding anything, but you get the feeling he'd rather keep his private life private. So this was pretty neat. He realized the impact he could have. Also, even though this isn't likely to impact Apple's bottom line, as a CEO you are under pressure to not make yourself into a controversy. But if any CEO could do this, it was Cook at this stage of Apple's life. So good for him for embracing the moment.

As an aside: Jim Stewart of the NY Times wrote something on gay CEOs -- the impetus was a book by John Browne, the BP CEO -- a few months ago, and he was on CNBC, and idiotic Simon Hobbs outed Cook in one of the most awkard moments of TV I had seen in a while. The silence was deafening.

I am positive I had read or heard that he was gay when he was first hired as CEO. I thought this was old news.

You did. It is. From December 2013:

So you don't care? That is so cool.

He doesn't quite say it there, though. It's just implied, like Jodie Foster.

    It is old news.

There must be some activist group wanting to get him in the headlines, but this isn't a revelation at all.

If it's old news - and I agree it's a poorly kept secret - find me the story before this in which Tim Cook says he's out and gay.

I tried to find one a few years ago, because I saw him listed as an "out" celebrity - it may have been here on a thread.

    I couldn't.

Tony Dungy just threw away his iPhone and iPad, they were becoming too much of a distraction

Did he stand on a stage and say it? I don't know.

But here is a link from Aug. 24, 2011 -- Tim Cook: Apple's New CEO And The Most Powerful Gay Man In America

From April 2011 -- Apple Boss Tim Cook Tops Out's Power List

There was the flap last year when someone on CNBC accidentally said it on air, and then Cook went to a Pride parade right after that.

I remember the local news outlets having articles on it when he was promoted, but the first five pages of Google are dominated by today's news so I can't find those. But I think you see the point.

This story explicitly says he's not out, and quotes "sources" speculating that he's gay.
