    Von Hayes was the one in a one-for-five so for bonus points: Name the five.

    Clueless on the 1-7 deal.

    And I know the Triple Crown winner but I'll let others guess for a while. Omaha was the offspring.

    BONUS: British nerve, Russian blood, and American money.

    OK, I had help from another member, not google: Vida Blue.
    But Blue was traded for eight players and about 400 large. So is it him or is there ANOTHER big trade we're missing?
    Gallant Fox is correct.

    Wasn't that trade voided though?

    No, a sale was voided - to the Yanks? That trade went through. Name the eight (I can't).

    Gallant Fox . . . owned by the father of the guy who owned Nashua -- William Woodward Jr. -- whose inadvertent stoppage of a bullet was the cause celebre which was the centerpiece of The Two Mrs. Grenvilles.

    Trade to the Reds was voided - I did look that up.

    The Eight: Gary Alexander, Gary Thomasson, Dave Heaverlo, Alan Wirth, John Henry Johnson, Phil Huffman, $300,000 and a player to be named later (March 15, 1978) - A's received Mario Guerrero (April 7, 1978);

    Except that is SEVEN plus the cash, so this must be the answer. I didn't cheat until I went to find the players. Honest!

    Moddy,

    Here's what I got from Baseball Reference:

    March 15, 1978: Traded by the Oakland Athletics to the San Francisco Giants for a player to be named later, Gary Alexander, Gary Thomasson, Dave Heaverlo, Alan Wirth, John Henry Johnson, Phil Huffman, and $300,000. The San Francisco Giants sent Mario Guerrero (April 7, 1978) to the Oakland Athletics to complete the trade.

    Maybe us guys from Three Chopt Tech aren't as smart as you VCU guys but I only count seven. ;D

    Well, see my post above your smarty pants - I counted SEVEN, too. His bio said eight but they must have counted the cash as one.
