Your last line proved my whole point. You vote with your conscience and with faith, but you know there has to be some flexibility in there. I applaud that.

What I don't applaud, however, is what has been pointed out here earlier, where the church (or any religion) tries to dictate to its followers how they should vote based on church doctrine. That's placing the church over the state. Not God, but the church and its precepts.

Now if "the church" means that much to you, good on you, but I don't think that makes you a particularly enviable American.

 

When the preachers bring their political views into the arena of secular politics, they get bashed - or not - accordingly. (There is no "Christian" position on the estate tax. Sorry, there just isn't. There are ministers who, like any other oligarchs except Warren Buffett, don't like it, but the theological gloss on it is just that.) Religion and politics can or can't be separate in someone's mind. But they must be kept separate from all spheres on the secular government.
