Deputies, agents break up Bug Tussle cockfighting ring

CULLMAN (AP) — Cullman County sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement agents raided an illegal cockfighting operation in the Bug Tussle community, seizing more than $13,000 and a computer used for registering participants.

Deputies arrested Jason Lee Campbell of Nauvaoo on Wednesday. Campbell, who posted a $1,000 bond the same day he was arrested, allegedly ran the operation and was charged with keeping a cockpit and cockfighting. More than 200 people attended Saturday's cockfighting event, which was shut down about 9:45 a.m.

Sheriff Tyler Roden said more arrests could follow as names are extracted from the registry on the seized computer.

"There were cars with tags from all over the state and from Tennessee when we got there," Roden said.

A barn hidden behind a residence off Cullman County 18 housed stadium seating for about 150 people. It also had a concession stand and a cockpit with caged sides.

Roden said spurs and dead roosters were found on the scene. The maximum fine for cockfighting is $50 in Alabama.

Roden said they were alerted to the operation, which had been raided about eight years before, when residents started filing complaints.
