I have a strong disdain for people who get their shoes shined in public. I used to commute into Grand Central every day, and there'd always be a handful of guys sitting up on the elevated chair while Porterhouse put the spit shine on their shoes. I did it once, just to see what it felt like. And yup, I felt like an elitist dbag. Never again.

If you can wipe your own ass, you can shine your own freaking shoes.

As uncomfortable as it may be for you, shining shoes is how people who shine shoes make a living. Just tip well, don’t act like an elitist douchebag, and you won’t be one.

OK, I've never had my shoes shined by another person. What does something like that cost, and what's an appropriate tip?

I know, I know. Look at it this way; who are you hurting by not getting your shoes shined? Who are you helping by getting them shined? Perhaps you’re concerned more about how you appear to others walking by than how you will be appreciated by the small business owner who is providing a service. We can agree that some folks fit the stereotype of Judge Smales and Porterhouse, but you don’t have to be one of them. Just treat the shoe shiner with respect and treat yourself every once in a while.
