I'm agreeing with you....Steinbrenner is a great owner and spends to get players, but that doesn't guarantee anything.

Not to Yankees levels, but TV rights fees are indeed based on how attractive a viewing property a team's games are perceived to be -usually a direct correlation to W-L record.

If the team is a big winner (or more importantly, was a big winner the season before), more and more people want to watch the games, ratings go up, and thus commercial time becomes more valuable.

When the team sucks hind titty for years and years, as in the case of the Royals and Pirates, and the Tigers up until this year, TV viewership is poor, and thus commercial time must be sold at lower rates.

    Spend money to make money.

There isn't that big a swing. I would be willing to wager the Pirates aren't getting appreciably more money for TV rights than they did when they were winning division titles in the early '90s.

And even then it's a small fraction of what the Yankees can command in NY.

You're still selling advertising in a much smaller market. The No. 1 TV station in New York has a hell of a lot more revenue than the No. 1 station in Pittsburgh, which generates a lot more than the No. 1 station in Evansville, IN.

You're right. No other team in baseball signs international free agents. Only the Yankees!

Wang could have been had as a throw-in to any one of the big deals the Yankees made before May 2005. Nobody else wanted him. I guess the inability of anyone to see this guy as a groundball machine is another example of how unfair the Yankees have made baseball?

As for the Howard thing, a.) nobody despises Selig more than I do and b.) for a guy in journalism, you're not very inquisitive. I wish I had a dime for every time you assumed something and then, when someone pointed out you were wrong, either denigrated that person (hello Chris L) or said oh, well, I didn't care enough to look it up in the first place. I might have enough $$$ to pay Wang's salary this year.

And again: For all the extra $$$ Cashman has had the last six seasons, he's got as many World Series titles in that span as Terry Ryan. And the Patriots, in the happily socialistic NFL, have three crowns.

My head hurts. Bashing it against a wall is not good for it, I guess.

Haha Boomer you know I long ago buried my contempt for the Yankees.

It has been replaced by contempt for those who blame the Yankees for all that is "wrong" with baseball. And there's so much wrong with baseball that it's the only major sport with six different champs in the last six years.

    God bless you, Buck.

But beware of Columbo's wraith. You'll hear words you've never even heard on the NIAFL board.
