There's a Digital Media Crash. But No One Will Say It

Josh Marshall is a sharp guy, and he's running one of the companies that he's talking about. I suspect that he's right. The mechanism is different but basically we've already seen this in the newspaper business.

There's a lot of fake news in revenue targets and anything else Wall Street conjurs up to churn accounts.

The piece has a link to a WSJ artilce (behind a paywall) about BuzzFeed missing its revenue target. The tone of the article was down on VC funded media sites in general.

Venture capital, like markets, moves in cycles. Anyone who doesn't realize that is either very inexperienced, or a journalist-turned-entrepreneur who'll soon lose his/her shirt.

I kind of think the App/service sector is heading for a crash as well. What might work and be needed in the Bay Area might not have a prayer in other markets. Plus, the industry is entirely dependent on cell phones and wifi signals.

I really don’t see the point of 99 percent of apps. Make a damn website responsive and they’re pretty much useless.

Imagine if cell phone carriers start demanding a "taste" of what Uber or whatever is taking in? You are a company selling a product, but as of now you don't pay a dime to ensure that customers can reach you. It's like a store paying no rent. Same with Amazon. Verizon and Comcast are getting money from customers to reach businesses. Surprised they haven't charged business to be able to make sure they are accessible to customers.
