    Re: The Veepstakes Tournament

    Democrats
    1. Sen. Jim Webb (VA) vs. 16. Fmr. Rep. Tim Roemer (IN)
    8. Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) vs. 9. Fmr. Sen. Sam Nunn (GA) - Obama/Hagel - no chance, McCain
    5. Gov. Bill Richardson (NM) vs. 12. Gov. Janet Napolitano (AZ)
    4. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (KS) vs. 13. Fmr. Sen. Tom Daschle (SD) - I see Sebelius as more charming and likeable than the other qualified females (Napolitano and Clinton). I think women would really respond to her. As far as Daschle goes, I think he's better off as a cabinet member like some have suggested.
    3. Gov. Ted Strickland (OH) vs. 14 Sen. Chris Dodd (CT) - I've talked to Dodd a number of times. Very intelligent and obviously has the experience for any role..
    6. Sen. Joe Biden (DE) vs. 11. Gov. Ed Rendell (PA) - IMO, the toughest matchup in this bracket.
    7. Gov. Tim Kaine (VA) vs. 10. Sen. Evan Bayh (IN)
    2. Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY) vs. 15. Fmr. Sen. John Edwards (NC) - Forget about how much the two dislike each other. . .Obama/Clinton ticket would result in one of the biggest blowouts in U.S. presidential history, no matter who McCain picks.

    Republicans
    1. Gov. Tim Pawlenty (MN) vs. 16. Mayor Michael Bloomberg (NY)
    8. Sec. of State Condi Rice vs. 9. Gov. Mark Sanford (SC)
    5. Gov. Bobby Jindal (LA) vs. 12. Gov. Jon Huntsman (UT) - Huntsman is very likeable and has, by all accounts, done a fine job in Utah. Jindal on the other hand...ughhh.
    4. Fmr. Gov. Mitt Romney (MA) vs. 13. Fmr. Homeland Sec. Tom Ridge (PA)
    3. Fmr. Gov. Mike Huckabee (AR) vs. 14. Gov. Sarah Palin (AK)
    6. Sen. Joe Lieberman (CT) vs. 11. Rep. Paul Ryan (WI)
    7. Sen. John Thune (SD) vs. 10. Fmr. Rep. Rob Portman (OH)
    2. Gov. Charlie Crist (FL) vs. 15. Hewlett-Packard Exec. Carly Fiorina

If I was Obama my top three would be 1. Clinton, 2. Sebelius, 3. Webb. If I was McCain, my top three would read 1. Crist, 2. Huckabee, 3. Pawlenty.

And he's been rumored as a possible Obama running mate.

    Romney/Jindal's awkward . . . but otherwise, matchups are much more clear-cut.

    Democrats
    1. Sen. Jim Webb (VA) vs. 9. Fmr. Sen. Sam Nunn (GA) -- blowout city
    5. Gov. Bill Richardson (NM) vs. 4. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (KS) -- tossup. I guess it depends on what effect the Obama campaign thinks Richardson will have in attracting the Latino vote.
    3. Gov. Ted Strickland (OH) vs. 11. Gov. Ed Rendell (PA) -- Ed Rendell as Veep? Are you kidding?
    10. Sen. Evan Bayh (IN) vs. 15. Fmr. Sen. John Edwards (NC) -- Bayh is like Butler: underseeded, bland and tough to beat. No way Edwards is a veep again.

    Republicans
    1. Gov. Tim Pawlenty (MN) vs. 8. Sec. of State Condi Rice -- blowout city
    5. Gov. Bobby Jindal (LA) vs. 4. Fmr. Gov. Mitt Romney (MA) -- Jindal's a hot property for Republicans. Come to think of it, that might be why Jindal sits this out. He doesn't want the stink of losing on him as he runs for president in 2012 or 2016.
    3. Fmr. Gov. Mike Huckabee (AR) vs. 6. Sen. Joe Lieberman (CT) -- I can't see either of these guys coming on.
    7. Sen. John Thune (SD) vs. 2. Gov. Charlie Crist (FL) -- two words why Crist won't be a veep candidate: confirmed bachelor. Google "Charlie Crist" and gay. Not that I care personally where Crist parks his vehicle, but I would think the GOP would be apoplectic to have a national-ticket candidate who has been dogged with rumors about his sexuality.

Given that Gore lost Tennessee in 2000, Clinton may have won in spite of Gore, or at least that Gore had a negligible effect.
