To summarize:

Couple decides to excavate their basement without a building permit.

The "contractors" , relatives of the owners, destabilize the outside walls during the renovation process.

City comes in, does an engineering assessment and declares the house unsafe.

City demolishes the building and will send the happy couple a bill for about $100,000--the approximate cost of the demolition.

I'm sure someone at sj. will decry "government interference".

I'm sorry for this couple but Jesus, get a building permit and a licensed contractor before you do this stuff.

$100,000 for demolition? that has to be a mistake.

Get the permit, or have your house demolished.
