Book reports Shepard was killed by his gay lover, possibly over meth. If this is true one of the gay community's poster boys was nothing but a fraud...will be interesting to see how this plays out.

    Interesting and concerning.

I think somebody may be getting away with something.

By "nothing but a fraud" do you mean he had it coming or somehow deserves blame for his own murder?
And didn't one or both of his killers use the "gay panic" defense?

    They both did...does that matter?

So you're suggesting that Matthew Shepard in some way contributed to The Narrative surrounding his own death?

The "nothing but a fraud" bit refers to the Matthew Shepard as created in the telling of his murder, not the Shepard who was actually murdered.

This is a new low. Congratulations.

(Yes, I read the link. It even admits everything is anecdotal. It's also based on an assumption that Shepard MUST HAVE done something wrong, and that the admitted killer and methhead was capable of logical thoughts. And, for good measure, the admitted killer repeats his admission that he killed Shepard because of a come-on attempt.)

Did our need to make a symbol of Shepard blind us to a messy, complex story that is darker and more troubling than the established narrative?

I'm sure you hope this is true.

When 20/20 engaged Jimenez to work on a segment revisiting the case in 2004, GLAAD bridled at what the organization saw as an attempt to undermine the notion that anti-gay bias was a factor; Moises Kaufman, the director and co-writer of The Laramie Project, denounced it as “terrible journalism.”
