I remember that the Four Seasons Motel had coin operated massage beds.

Fucking A right they did. We made sweet love that night. :D

Knowing what I know now, we probably stayed there because dad didn't budget enough money to stay at the Rapid City Hilton again.

The D.C. trip is my favorite, but that trip was a blast too.

Intriguing. You have some songs high on the list I never would've guessed and Time After Time at No. 8 is an absolute shocker.

I thought maybe Town Called Malice scraped the bottom of the Hot 100, but I found no evidence to support that.

And it must be in our genes to hate the Thompson Twins.

My list would look a lot different if I knew what U2, REM, the Smiths, New Order and others were doing that week.

Only nominated songs are eligible. Starman went off the board, but his off-board songs, good though they are, won't count.

This list is just so random. If you would have given me one title at a time, there’s no way I would have pegged it as being 1984. Some songs seem like they would have been early 80s, others a few years later. And who would have thought that the Thompson Twins would be the only group with two songs on the list.

    1 Sister Christian, Night Ranger
2 You Can’t Get what you want, Joe Jackson
3 Against All Odds, Phil Collins
    4 The Reflex, Duran Duran
5 The Longest Time, Billy Joel
6 Head Over Heels, The Go-Gos
7 Hold Me Now, Thompson Twins
    8 Borderline, Madonna
9 Dancing in the Dark, Bruce Springsteen
10 Time After Time, Cyndi Lauper
11 Heart of Rock & Roll, Huey Lewis
    12 When Doves Cry, Prince
13 Eyes Without a Face, Billy Idol
    14 Self Control, Laura Branigan
    15 Run Runaway, Slade
16 Dance Hall Days, Wang Chung
    17 Legs, ZZ Top
18 Sunglasses at Night, Corey Hart
    19 Doctor, Doctor, Thompson Twins
    20 No More Words, Berlin

    Worst song: Hello, Lionel Ritchie

The only thing White Horse was missing was Speak and Spell type sounds to go along with the rest of the cheeserific spacey audio.

Fuck it then. If our choices are dictated by the charts, why not just reprint the charts?

To the list, which suffers because Husker Du's Zen Arcade put nothing in the top 100:

    1. White Horse -- Laid Back (Bubs, don't know if you had moved to Indy yet by the time this came out, but 'TLC played this all the time. All. The. Time.)

    2. When Doves Cry -- Prince

    3. The Ghost in You -- The Psychedelic Furs (I believe I was the biggest Furs fan at Carmel High. Or the only one who would cop to it.)

    4. My Ever Changing Moods -- The Style Council (before Paul Weller really went off the pretentious deep end as a soulster)

    5. Who's That Girl -- Eurythmics

    6. Oh Sherrie -- Steve Perry. What can I say, it's catchy as hell.

    7. Run Runaway -- Slade (Everyone do yourself a favor -- go on YouTube and look at everything from Slade in the early 70s. You'll not only start pumping your first, you'll know why AC/DC and Def Leppard sound like they do.)

    8. Rock You Like A Hurricane -- Scorpions (speaking of fist pumping)

    9. Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly) -- Icicle Works

    10. Legs -- ZZ Top (pause typing so I can do that swing-your-wrists-and-point-with-both-index-fingers move)

    11. I'll Wait -- Van Halen

    12. Dance Hall Days -- Wang Chung

    13. What Is Love -- Howard Jones

    14. Sister Christian -- Night Ranger

    15. I Can Dream About You -- Dan Hartman

    16. What's Love Got to Do with It -- Tina Turner

    17. Eyes Without a Face -- Billy Idol (first concert, Indianapolis Sports/Tennis Center, summer 1984)

    18. Time After Time -- Cyndi Lauper (and the Hooters!)

    19. You Can't Get What You Want -- Joe Jackson

    20. Hello -- Lionel Richie (just for the video)

Worst song: Rod Stewart -- Infatuation. Put on anything he did on from 1968-74, solo, Jeff Beck, Faces. Any single song. Then put on "Infatuation," and try not to cry for wasted talent.

Kraftwerk kicks off "Home Computer" (1981) with the Speak 'n' Spell on-off noises.
